Musicscan: give our readers a short briefing about regurgitate, please.
Regurgitate: High! We formed back in late 90, didn't record a demo until 91 which
turned out more embarrassing that I could ever imagine even though we
managed to get our first split 7 ep deal. Years passed by and several songs
were recorded for ep´s with grudge and psychotic noise. In 93 we recorded
songs for a split cd with Dead and in 94 we did a line up change. Kicked out
our first drummer and added two guys from Crematory. We then recorded our
first full length cd for Lowland Rec. In 95 we went to Germany and did two
shows with Dead Infection and Entrails Massacre. Then we took a break from
the scene for almost 4 years. Got back together but with a new drummer and
recorded a promo cd which we sent to Relapse and that resulted in a deal
with them. In 2000 we recorded Carnivorous Erection. We also recorded more
crappy songs for ep´s with Realized, Cripple Bastards and Filth. In 2001 we
did a few shows and recorded Hatefilled Vengeance, went on tour with Skrupel
and Entrails massacre in fall 01. 2002 was a good year for RGTE where we did
a handful of really killer shows with (again) our brothers in grind Entrails
Massacre and Suppository. Later that year we also recorded Deviant in
Musicscan: what's your self-understanding of regurgitate? what does your band stands
for? what are goals you are reaching for?
Regurgitate: Our goals are to be able to do some good recordings every year and also
to play live as much as we can. What RGTE stands for?? Fast music and pure
fuckin´ madness, hahahaha!!! To be able to hang out with our German friends
in Entrails Massacre means a lot for us.
Musicscan: it looks like you are very experienced with tough situations. like "what
doesn't kill you makes you stronger." am I right?
Regurgitate: No man, you're not really correct. We all live pretty peaceful lives here
Musicscan: tell me something about band members background, please. what have been
bands you played in in the past?
Regurgitate: I'm the only original member left in the band, Urban have also been
playing with Crematory (THE TRUE!!!!) and he's also a member of Nasum.
Jockey is the black metal guy in the band, he's drumming in Thy Promordial
and have also been in Dawn (swe) and Retaliation. Glenn is the American guy
in RGTE. used to be in Vomit Spawn, Coprophilia and Cardiovascular
Musicscan: your band name is kind of negative sounding, so are some of your lyrics I
think. (I mean they aren't understandable at all.)
why? do you feel it same way?
Regurgitate: Negative or not, we like it. It suited us very good when we used to do
the gore/splatter type style. Lyrics?? What's that?
Musicscan: why doesn't the album include a lyric sheet? the shouting isn't
understandable, so... what are the topics you guys deal with?
Regurgitate: The lyrics isn't really important for me/us. I just have lyrics to make
it easier for me to sing, they deal with the same shit as the song titles.
Read the titles, there you have the lyrics basically.
Musicscan: are the lyrics equally important to the music? do all members identify with
Regurgitate: hell no!! As I said, the lyrics isn't important at all. We all believe
that the music comes in first hand, we're not that preaching type band. We
just want to play fast and have fun!
Musicscan: are there any messages that you guys are trying to get out into the scenes?
Regurgitate: Hahahaha, no!
Musicscan: does your singer feel kind of self-hate? I do not know how to call it
better. what makes him scream so vitriolic? his style
of shouting is kind of ill-natured. why did he choose to go this direction?
Regurgitate: yeah, soon I'll kill myself, hahahahaha!!! Regarding my style of
"singing", that's just the way I sound.
Musicscan: do you consider yourself being nihilists in one way or another? I sometimes
think you create your music to provoke people - right?
Musicscan: lets speak about your musical progression. what has changed since you formed
Regurgitate: The songs, the vocals... everything except the speed. We have started to
make the songs all together now which I think have a strong impact on our
new sound. I think it's positive to change your way of sounding every now
and then, otherwise it gets boring if all albums sounds the same (read
Musicscan: who influenced you when you were coming up? ...and are there any bands right
now that you are interested in?
Regurgitate: Without any doubt Carcass and Napalm Death but also smaller bands like
Stench of Corpse and Fear of God. Yeah, there are a lot of cool grind bands
that I like nowadays, even though I can't stand grind core for more than 20
min. at a time. it gets boring to listen to. Bands worth mentioning are
Entrails Massacre, Sanity's Dawn, Realized, Gore beyond necropsy and The
Musicscan: what's your motivation to play especially this heavy kind of music?
Regurgitate: make better and more varied songs, to play live and go on tour every now
Musicscan: if you would summarize the message and atmosphere of your music in one
sentence. what would it be?
Regurgitate: hatefilled grindcore DELUXE!
Musicscan: can you take one typical song and explain what you hope people are getting
out of it, please.
Regurgitate: As we're a band without any kind of message it's hard to do that. I just
hope that people still like us even though we dropped certain details in our
Musicscan: what is the song you guys feel especially proud of (whether compositionally,
Regurgitate: For me personally it's the one that our bass player did a video of
(waging war of benevolence). It think that song came out awesome swell as
Musicscan: what do you think is the most positive thing in the current
grind/punk/crust/hc-scene, as well as the worst?
Regurgitate: Worst: All the pretentious cunts out there. -
best: The possibility to play live in Europe.
Musicscan: you surely read press reviews for your releases. what are comments you can
not feel familiar with? maybe some comparisms or something like this...
Regurgitate: That they compare our sound to Nasum. Well, at one point I understand it
but when people say that we're a Nasum clone band nowadays I really get
pissed. Yeah, we record in the same studio and both bands play grind core
but that's fuckin´ it. If you listen carefully to both bands you'll start to
hear LOTS of differences between the bands.
Musicscan: for how long do you think that you can tour on the new record? I think you
didn't tour that much on the last one. unfortunately
I missed it to see you playing live here in Berlin. I was too late and the
club already sold out. it was this gig with autoritär and Y i think...
Regurgitate: That's true, we didn't do any gigs at all 2000. This year we will not do
any shows at all as both me and our drummer just got kids again so we'll be
laying low until 2004 when we hopefully will be able to tour the states as
well as both Germany and Holland. No idea of how long we will be able to
tour though. Time shall tell. Yeah, the gig in Berlin was awesome but Y
cancelled their gig for various reasons (rumors said that they didn't wanted
to play with us coz of our controversial album covers and song titles).
Musicscan: what kind of feeling is it to play your songs in front of a crowd?
Regurgitate: No special feelings at all really.
Musicscan: is there something you want the people to leave your shows with?
Regurgitate: Lots of RGTE merch and a happy face!
Musicscan: what was the weirdest thing a fan has ever done during a live gig you
Regurgitate: We haven't experienced any weird fans yet but at the Berlin show the
singer from Flächenbrand threw confetti on the stage and created a fuckin´
awesome feeling with it!! ÖLAF RULES!!!!
Musicscan: something you would like to mention at the end? just do it.
Regurgitate: Thanx for the interview and make sure you catch us next time we play in
